Youths Skate Hockey Ice Fish as Cold Weather Nears

Spooner area youths have enjoyed skating and fishing for a month while state forecast calls for a hardening of the water with seasonably cold and snowy weather ahead.

Land O Lakes Cenex approve merger plan

Land O Lakes and Cenex members overwhelmingly back a joint venture to shift competition to cooperation. Cenex will run petroleum, Land O Lakes will run feed and seed, with a Cenex managed fertilizer and chemical unit. Anticipated annual savings exceed ten million dollars, offset by initial five million in closing costs and layoffs. Authorities expect over 100 job losses as duplication ends. The new CenexLand O Lakes Ag Services will launch jointly if antitrust clears, by January 1 before spring planting season.

Iowa County farmer named Wisconsin conservation farmer of the year

Bob Esch of Iowa County is honored as Wisconsin conservation farmer of the year by the Wisconsin Land Conservation Association for 27 years of conservation work on his 480 acre farm with his son Dan. He adopted no till corn in 1983 after meetings and neighbor tips and continues to expand practices like diversions windbreaks waterways terraces ponds and ag waste management to cut soil loss to zero.

Weekend cold snap with light snow from NWS forecast

National Weather Service calls for colder temperatures with light snow or flurries Thursday through Saturday and heavier snow in the far north. Highs reach the upper teens Thursday and Friday, rising to the mid 20s Saturday, with lows in the teens.

Shawano picks Rosenow Schmidt farms for 1989 Farm Progress Days

Shawano County selects the Rosenow and Schmidt farms on Highway 22 as the joint site for the 1989 Wisconsin Farm Progress Days. The three day show in mid July expects over 150000 visitors. The 574 acre pair features 500 tillable acres with well drained level land and dairy operations. The Rosenows milk 45 Holstein cattle.
