NOAA Winter Forecast Promises Storms Across Great Lakes East Coast

NOAA long range forecaster Dr. Donald Gilman says this winter will likely bring stormy wet weather to the Great Lakes region and the East Coast from Maine to Florida, with colder than normal temperatures favored in the south central U.S. and milder conditions west of the Rockies. The pattern depends on jet stream behavior and tropical Pacific warming, which already shows 1 to 3 degree ocean increases from the Solomon Islands to off South America.

Co-ops urged to grow to compete in agriculture

Dr. Randall Torgerson, administrator of Agriculture Cooperative Services, told about 150 western Wisconsin farmers at the Menomonie Farm Forum that cooperatives must expand to stay viable. He cited 5,625 U.S. co-ops with $65.5 billion in 1985 sales, contrasting with GM’s $96.4 billion, and praised mergers like Land O Lakes with Cenex. He supported broader co-op mergers and noted co-ops distribute profits to more people than many private firms.
