Decline of Comets Skeptics Note Fewer Naked Eye Visitors
Astronomers report a serious shortage of comets in recent years, especially large ones. Historically about 15 naked eye comets per century have been observed, but only three such comets have appeared recently. Halley’s comet last appeared 23 years ago and was smaller than before, suggesting celestial visitors are thinning. The tails of comets diminish as light’s corpuscular nature helps explain the fading gas and dust.

Tariff Move Against Japan Draws Mixed Reactions
The federal tariff commission backs a 42 percent rise in cotton textile imports from Japan, a move urged by American manufacturers to curb perceived Japanese industrial gains. Japan protests through Ambassador Hiroshi Saito, saying its textile success stems from national skill, not subsidies or cheap labor. The public might back Washington’s stance, though critics note trade tensions aside, Japan remains a large buyer of U.S. cotton. The piece also notes Bruce Barton’s GOP publicity role, calling him well suited to the task and referencing The Man Nobody Knows.
