Mississippi Integration Does About Face

Mississippi schools, once the nation’s most segregated, surged to higher integration levels than California, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin between 1968 and 1970. The HEW data show the South driving a nationwide desegregation rise, with 690,000 of 756,000 additional Black students in integrated schools. Northern districts generally worsened, while only Southern and Western districts improved among the 30 largest. The report, based on districts with over 3,000 pupils, could fuel calls for mandatory racial balancing in the North and West.
