Wage Jump May Increase Erie Tax Levy in 1942
Erie City Council debated payroll costs and proposed raising the tax levy from 14 to 19 mills to cover payrolls. Streets Director Harry J. Wilches warned the raise requires more money from taxes, while Finance Director Pell F. Watson said next year’s tax rate need not rise. An allocated $112,000 WPA WEA grant helps cover this year and next year’s expenditures without increasing the 1949 budget.

Seaway Plan Draws Coal Loss Warnings From PA Operators
Western Pennsylvania Coal Operators Association told the House rivers and harbors committee that the proposed St Lawrence Seaway would slash coal production in western Pennsylvania. If disruption lowers output by 10,000,000 tons, about 11,000 workers face job losses. Canadian and Great Lakes shipments could shift or diminish, harming regional coal trade. A quiz section provides answers to test questions listed on page 4.
