Rail express service faces collapse as major lines withdraw
Six eastern railroads including Pennsylvania and New York Central plan to pull out of the Railway Express Agency. Central has already ended service January 1, 1960, with others likely to follow. Half the lines may retain half the service while others drop it entirely, as competition from bus and truck widens losses and parcel post rates rise. The shift threatens broad disruption to freight and consumer packages as express handling tightens.
