A bleak New Year toll rose rapidly as motorists pushed highway fatalities toward the 1957 four day record. The National Safety Council urged drivers to slow down while AP tallies showed high counts in both traffic and fire deaths during the holiday period.
The Buffalo Regional Blood Center bloodmobile will visit Corry next Tuesday setting up at the WEW building from 11 to 1 30. Jan Howard, Red Cross blood donor chairman, notes Corry Memorial Hospital received 148 pints of whole blood last year and stresses ongoing needs of 8 to 12 pints weekly to maintain a fresh supply for emergencies and for patients in out-of-town hospitals. Blood is also processed into derivatives at Buffalo. Call Red Cross headquarters in the Library Building to book an appointment, with walk-ins welcome.
Carlyle Merrit of 23 Marion Street was taken into custody yesterday on a complaint by the General Electric Credit Union. City patrolmen turned Merritt over to an eye constable and charged him with fraudulent conversion. He allegedly obtained a loan from GE Credit Union, bought a car, sold it, and used the proceeds to pay off the loan.
Corry area police hunt Walter J. Smith a recently released prisoner believed to forge checks using Salvatore Leta and Harry Goldberg names. Smith, about 150 pounds with a scar above his left eye and sandy hair, is driving a gray 1952 convertible with temporary plates and lacks a valid Pennsylvania license. He has ties to Union City and is currently not in official custody.
