CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP a busy 1958 ended with a double bang at this space age shooting gallery A Navy Polaris test rocket and an Air Force Thor were launched Tuesday before the New Year s Day shutdown and both exploded in the sky It highlighted a year of launches satellites long range missiles and space probes as the base pressed toward moon shots Residents took the blows in stride noting the nation s progress in the space race despite the blasts.

New Year's Finds West Under Snow

A large portion of the Midwest and Southwest will welcome the new year under snow up to ten inches deep. The storm, after hitting New Mexico, moved east and north, dropping four to eight inches in parts of Oklahoma Kansas and Missouri.
