Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird said the South Vietnamese Laos drive is on schedule and will allow the United States to meet or beat its plan to withdraw 50,000 more troops by May 1. He testified to the Senate Armed Services Committee on South Vietnamese and Laos operations and noted about 10,000 U.S. troops serve as backup in Vietnam while U.S. forces stay within congressional limits on Laos and Cambodia. Laird said the Laos operation is progressing on the schedule outlined by Vietnamese and field commanders and will help Vietnamization.
