Washington AP reports Senate proposes federal tuition aid up to 1200 per year for all undergraduates with family income under 10000. Sen Claiborne Pell says the plan would cover about 5 million students. The bill seeks to expand access to higher education through federal grants.
Apollo 14 nears a Pacific splashdown in a bid to return to Earth on Tuesday. Commander Shepard and crewmates Mitchell and Roosa prepared for landing while reflecting on the space program’s goals for peace and understanding.
More than 30 retailers will take part in the Washington's Birthday Sale planned for Thursday to Saturday. Sponsored by the Retail Merchants Division of the Chamber of Commerce, the event opens a year of promotions led by Lou Rossin of Rossin's Men's Wear. The three day sale spans Washington's Birthday Lincoln's Birthday and Valentine's Day. Wednesday's Journal will advertise promotions as retailers push money savers with banners. In Nemacolin Pa a man died after falling at the Nemacolin Fire Hall.
The United States and South Vietnam say the Laos strike will be limited in time and area to protect American lives during troop withdrawals. The operation targets the Sepone region within the 16th to 17th parallels, with air support but no American ground forces crossing into Laos. The policy reiterates self defense, adherence to law, and reports to UN and allied governments.
State Police at Corry arrested two juveniles Saturday on one count of larceny and two counts of hit and run. The youths stole a Guttman Oil Company car in Belle Vernon and fled toward Erie, striking a Greyhound Bus and later another car driven by Phyllis Wade in Union City before being picked up in Spartansburg. They will await a hearing at a juvenile home in Washington County. A separate arrest tied to four tires stolen from Cliff Buesink Ford led to Walter H. Gurdak, 18, and a juvenile. four tires were found in Gurdak's car. Arraigned before Justice Porter Auer, they were released on bond.
Harrisburg AP. After a pep talk from Gov. Shapp, House Democrats begin counting votes to pass a 1.57 billion tax program. Shapp will speak at a private meeting before a 3 p.m. session as the Senate also reconvenes. The plan includes a 5 percent income tax, sales tax elimination on consumer items, and senior citizen relief. House Speaker Fineman aims to pass without GOP help, while rural Democrats may block it or demand Republican votes. Republicans demand details of spending. a five month tax extension is debated. The House holds 113-89 partisan control, needing 102 votes. the Senate stands 26-23. Irvis to unveil spending-control bills this week.
City engineers expect the Worth Street landfill to cap in five years turning the area into a leveled residential tract. Refuse costs run about 2 per cubic yard as the 41,000 yearly payment under Superior Refuse Service continues. The plan, aided by the county solid waste master program, aims to end the search for new landfill sites.
WARREN AP The body of William F. Battko aged 63 was found in the charred ruins of his Pittsfield home. Firemen reported the fire Saturday afternoon about 4 40 and investigators found the body around 10 am Sunday. Police say he was alone in the two story dwelling on Davey Hill Road Deerfield Township when the fire broke out. The cause is not yet determined though state and county investigators continue the probe.
In Pittsburgh a 13 year old, Curtis Arnold of Hazelwood, was shot and killed by officers pursuing him in Sunset View Cemetery near Penn Hills after they found him stripping a stolen car. Six officers entered the cemetery and discharged service revolvers. one bullet struck Arnold as he fled. The exact gun that fired was not immediately determined.
