Aurora Lights Audible as Steam Like Hiss Sound
AURORA GIVES OFF SOUND LIKE HISSING STEAM reports from Clark Garber in Science describing the aurora borealis as not only visible but audible. While guiding a reindeer trek near the Arctic divide, Garber and his Eskimo driver heard a clearly audible crackling steam-like sound as luminous beams passed overhead. The phenomenon, noted during a night ascent to the divide near Cage Prince of Wales, lasted as each beam moved in sequence over about six to eight minutes, with steady background hum.
