Harrisburg officials report the new works program replacing the CWA has started strongly in most counties. By month’s end about 19 000 could be employed under the system with pay clocks being arranged. Some counties have not yet submitted projects for approval and remaining federal funds are set to flow through March 81.
In Pittsburgh on April 4 two Oliver High School students, Joseph Laroveo, 16, and Phut Br. Disfernian, were killed when struck by lightning while walking to school near a vacant lot. A classmate reported the incident as they were rushed to Allegheny General Hospital but attempts to revive them failed. The victims were found beneath the remnants of an umbrella.
Governor Pinchot, tanned and reportedly feeling fine, arrived back in Harrisburg from Florida after a December illness and a Florida visit. He told reporters he would not discuss politics until latest returns and planned to map his senatorial campaign while handling business at the capitol.
Corry High School seeks automobile donations to transport pupils to Erie for the county finals in the Northwestern Pennsylvania Music and Drama League. Washington April 4. An emergency plan to avert a threatened collapse of wholesale gasoline marketing will be announced tomorrow by the petroleum administrative board. Harold C. Ickes is expected to make the announcement. Insurance agent dies in Oil City. Parks W. Geiger, 68, a well known agent, died last night after a heart attack at an insurance association bouquet. Survived by widow and three daughters.
J J Desmond and Clyde F Brown, delegates for the Golden Rule Chia, confer with Crawford and 6th Bries county boards in Erie and Meadville. They press paving of the Corry Spartansburg road and plan meetings with county officials and Harrisburg to win state highway support.
Five coal miners, trapped for six hours after an explosion and fire at the Sinclair Wagon Mine near Lenton, Ind., were rescued and emerged shaken but alive. They told neighbors of their ordeal as rescue teams, including a pit boss and other crew, reached them while a loyal pony that had hauled coal also survived the incident.
Philadelphia April 4 A slender camera records sixteen photos of the stomach lining marking a major advance in medical science. Henry Harrington at Hahnemann Hospital underwent the procedure as doctors hoped to diagnose a stomach ailment. A long tube was inserted through the mouth, lighted by a bulb and battery, and a film captured eight exposures on each side.

Major operators in western and central Pennsylvania adopt the seven hour day five day week and $1 basic wage, while smaller Pittsburg district firms begin under the new code. James Van Zandt national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, from Altoona Pennsylvania, was hospitalized after his car overturned near Douglas Wyoming. He later reached Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to address 800 veterans and urged immediate payment of adjusted compensation certificates to put money into circulation and boost business. He had a wrench ed back and other injuries but continued with his schedule despite the blizzard. He had previously spoken to Corry post members last year.
Washington reports Justice agents identified John Dillinger as one of two men who shot their way from a St Paul apartment last Saturday. Eugene Green, wounded in a surprise raid, was named the other suspect as agents pursued leads in the Bremer ransom case and related gang activity in St Paul and Washington.
