A striking Valentine motif decorates the Department Store window on the Avenue this week. Shoppers glimpse bold hearts and red accents creating an inviting storefront scene.
A scattered catalog of local businesses showcases kitchen items and apparel from Blairware Shop and Ballard & Brockett, with Maple wood salt mills and wool jersey blouses. Dozens of goods include Cocoanut syrup from Manila and Jack & Jill lemon butter from Australia, plus Valentine gifts at Oriental Arts. Visitors may sample roast beef sandwiches at Red Onion and meet Marcelle and Eddy.
Two former Broadway actors and an ex London actress headline La Jolla Players production of Life With Father at La Jolla High School Auditorium through Saturday. Cast includes William Castello as Father and tle Grant as Rev Lloyd with Lettice Cuttle as Margaret Day and Hale MacLaren as Mother Day. Directed by Bert and Bertha Johnson, this local revival marks the first community showing of the classic Broadway comedy in the area.
New series of dance lessons for seventh and eighth graders starts March 4 and 5 6 respectively. Classes listed include February Valentine Party and Hayride Party with a February 20 wager at Murray Dance Studios.
At the Shows Village Theatre shows James Cagney and Pat O’Brien in Angels with Dirty Faces and Humphrey Bogart with George Raft in They Drive by Night. Clark Gable and Jeanette MacDonald in San Francisco and The Marx Brothers in A Night at the Opera. Coronado Theatre features Bob Hope and Jane Russell in Paleface and Larry Parks with Marguerite Chapman in Gallant Blade.
Funeral services were held Monday in the Benbough Mortuary Chapel San Diego for Mrs Louisa Seaberg 88 of 211 F Avenue who died Friday evening in a hospital. Interment followed at Mount Hope Masonic Cemetery. A Sweden native, she had lived in Coronado sixty years and leaves no known survivors in this country. Her husband the late Capt Charles Seaburg was captain of ferryboats for 35 years.
Four concert soloists Ferruccio Tagliavini Clifford Curzon John Charles Thomas and Pia Tassinari will perform on February broadcasts of The Telephone Hour. The Bell Telephone Orchestra of 57 players, conducted by Donald Voorhees, will accompany the soloists on NBC at 9 p m Mondays.
A bill submitted before recess calls for immediate reactivation of California Naval Militia. Frank Luckel of San Diego, a retired Navy captain, heads a plan creating a seven member Naval Militia Board appointed by the Governor. The board would plan full reactivation under the U S Naval Reserve Act and form a skeleton force from former militia and National Guard personnel without routine armory drills. The Governor would appoint active or retired Navy officers and men to ranks as he sees fit.
Coronado and South Bay residents may obtain applications for the new class of Gray Ladies to be indoctrinated soon for service in the U S Naval Hospital by contacting Mrs Arthur Chytrus.
Coronado Junior High marks the second anniversary of Career Week on February 14. An opening luncheon for eight grade students will feature guest speaker Dr. Thomas Law Coyle after the assembly. Students will visit Coronado firms such as the Police Station Fire Department Public Library Coronado Journal F W James Son Nursery Gerrys Coffee Shop Dr Rockwell The Vegetarian Hotel del Coronado and in San Diego Marstons Store and KUSN radio.
The San Diego Youth Symphony invites parents and friends to its new Palyisades Building in Balboa Park for an invitational concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Miss Helen Donofrio, president of the symphony board, says the date for a forthcoming public program will be announced that night. Mrs. Albert Reader chairs arrangements, and aspiring young musicians may audition for conductor Leo Scheer on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Horace Mann School.
Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Dawson celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at 545 Palm Avenue with about ten couples attending. They were married in Trinidad, Colorado, and have son Tom, a 1948 Naval Academy graduate, and daughter Ann, a junior at Coronado High School. The program featured songs from 1924 and dancing. Mr. Dawson works as a navy aircraft inspector at North Island, and the couple has lived in Coronado for six years.
Mr and Mrs Graham A Turner and their daughter Marilyn recently moved from Vancouver British Columbia and now reside at 903 6th Street.
Lt William H Woods keynote at a South Bay residents meeting praised local protection and low unsolved crime. A South Bay Librarian appointment, hours at the branch, and library location were announced. The Imperial Beach Civic Group to publish a brochure on the organization. A new Medical-Dental building opened on Silver Strand Boulevard. Palm City Chamber hosted a film night at the South Bay Community Center.
Coronado Business and Professional Women's Club plans a 7 p.m. February 15 dinner at Caesars to honor the visit of national executive director Miss Olive Huston and mark the Tijuana club’s first anniversary. Members from San Diego County Council expected. International Week begins last week of February with a Universal Declaration of Human Rights theme.
The Valerie Higby Award Committee of the California Tuberculosis and Health Association offers a $150 prize for a paper on any aspect of tuberculosis. Coronado residents were informed through the County TB and Health organization. Submissions of up to 2000 words will be judged anonymously by leading California TB researchers and doctors.
