Reindeer Herds Rise in Alaska Meats and Trade
The article notes Alaska’s reindeer becoming a staple in American tables, with imports beginning in 18% and growing to about 160000 deer across 100 herds. Eskimos own most herds, government rules protect natives, and the industry blends fur, meat, and by products for distant markets. The animal is fast, hardy, and called the camel of the Arctic, used for long journeys and able to graze on mosses even in winter.
