Peanut Nostory: a Texas peanut rise from cotton to wealth
The Duster farmers adopted peanuts after a government bulletin suggested the crop. Five men, including John Nebers and J L Lewis, led the trial. By 1914 the county produced over 500 carloads annually, with prices rising from 1 to 3 dollars per bushel and hay valued as peanut vine. Mills opened at De Leon and Comanche, carloads grew, and profits soared, reshaping local agriculture from cotton dominance to peanut wealth.
