Good Conservation Practices By Cecil Riordan On Deep Sand
Cecil Riordan practices soil conservation on his farm two miles northeast of Rising Star. He strip crops peanuts with Sudan grass in eight by eight rows aligned to prevailing winds, followed by a winter cover crop of rye or vetch and rye. He uses sweep plows to keep residues on surface and applies fertilizers or manure to maintain fertility. His switch grass project aims to improve local agriculture on deep sandy soil and he joined the Soil Conservation District as a cooperating member in August.
