Mrs Henry Chambers and family will leave Comanche for Miami to attend the Baptist Convention. Henry Chambers is pastor of the Pia Church in Comanche and will accompany them.
Roy Taft Boswell a Comanche rural mail carrier died suddenly at a German hospital at 2 30 am Thursday May 12 after a heart attack the day before His home was in the Sipe Springs community Funeral services will be at the Sipe Springs Baptist Church Friday May 13 with burial in May Cemetery Comanche Funeral Home in charge He was born November 25 1908 near Sipe Springs son of Joseph William and Elizabeth Vines Boswell He served as a postmaster at Sipe Springs and as a rural carrier on Rt 1 before moving to Rural Route 2 in Comanche in 1957
John Leander Kiker of the Green Creek Community is nominated by the Upper Leon Soil Conservation District for 1959 Outstanding Conservation Farmer of Texas. The nomination cites his decades of soil and water conservation work since 1935 and leadership in Green Creek.
Comanche County voters flocked to the polls with more than 4,200 ballots cast. County Democratic Chairman D F Caraway led the poll with 4 189 votes while sheriff candidates drew 4 111. Howell Cobb won 2 868 in the 62nd District Judge race and Allen carried the three other counties in the district by 323 votes. Ben Barnes swept the 73rd State Representative District in Comanche County 3 313 to 668. Belve Bean won renomination for sheriff by 55 votes. Other results include runoffs for Tax Assessor Collector Beaty 1 878 Robinson 1 582 and Steed 572 and multiple precinct races with narrow margins. Governor Daniel led in county tallies 2 257 to 1 822. Congressman Burleson carried the county 2 708 to 588 and 571 for Wab staff.
The Highland community in western Earth county along Armstrong and Cow Creeks earned first place in the Fort Worth Press Contest as the top regional conservation group. They also won first in pasture and range improvement, placed fourth in community improvement, with cash prizes to fund further local projects.
Comanche Indian Bands host a Lake Eanes event on May 15 featuring an old fashioned country singing session and two instrumental concerts by Jr. and Sr. bands. A giant hamburger feast cooked by Band Parents concludes the day, with a $1 plate including burger, chips, dessert and drink.
Miss Harriet Cunningham 40 longtime editor of the Texas State Journal of Medicine and staff member of the Texas Medical Association since 1945 died in an Austin hospital May 8. Final rites were held at First Presbyterian Church of Comanche May 10 with Dr. Baxter Greer and Dr. C C Klingman officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery. Survivors: mother Mrs. Percy Moore Cunningham of Waco father W J Cunningham of Comanche and brother W Jack Cunningham of New Haven Conn.
Norman Moore a 26 year old livestock farmer from Sidney community near Stephenville will be honored Friday night May 13 at 7 30 o clock by the Upper Leon Soil Conservation Board for best reclaiming badly eroded farm land He expanded from 70 to 150 acres through conservation plans with his wife and family support after military service and active work with the Rush Creek Watershed Association.
Preliminary 1960 census figures from Max V. Mossholder indicate Comanche 3,403 De Leon 2,012 Gustine 340 and Comanche County 11,735. The counts, lower than 1950 totals, may be revised as non residents are credited and routine checks completed. Notify the Chamber of Commerce if not enumerated.
The Comanche Chief 1959 soil conservation issue, ninth consecutive, named best in the district by Upper Leon Soil Conservation Board of Supervisors. Thirty articles and 28 conservation pieces counted with a plaque awarded in 1957 by the Fort Worth Press.
