Comanche County reports a 28 percent seven year enrollment decline with 1925 fewer students over the period. The 1920 count was 7004, now 5089, with Comanche showing about an 8 percent drop this year and a 33 1 3 percent decline over seven years.
Twenty nine years in penalties were handed in criminal cases this week in the District Court. G C Augustine received 12 years and Alton Loggins 15 years for theft and burglary in last fall’s cases plus multiple counts. A record of nine guilty pleas in one day sped trial work under Judge Joe Eidson and District Attorney Shipman. Civil and criminal dockets set for next week with several dismissals and hung juries noted.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Bryan Henson and wife Bertha Henson and Virgil Bowmum after they rented a car, fled toward De Leon, and abandoned it. Separate thefts include a Ford roadster stolen near Downing, another touring car from Jim Turnbow, and a kerosene theft at Magnolia Filling Station in De Leon, with possible links to the driving trio.
The Brownwood Chamber of Commerce under H. Burks will run a district special train to Wichita Falls for the West Texas Chamber of Commerce meeting May 16 and 17. Fare is one way plus 20 cents. sleeper rate $1 per day. A district band of about sixty musicians may accompany the train to represent the counties joining Brownwood.

Publisher W H Carpenter testifies the Comanche Chief reaches about 3422 copies in Comanche County with 483 city subscribers and 742 on rural routes. The paper covers Proctor Gustine Sidney Dublin Hamilton Pottsville Indian Gap Mullin Goldthwaite Energy and May routes, with near total local reach.
Ruth Emert Western Union operator in Tullahou Louisiana reports by telegram to her parents that she is safe as floodwaters rise. Offices have been moved to buildings deemed safe about twenty miles from Vicksburg Mississippi. Rev Noel P Wilkinson attended his sister’s wedding in Brownwood Tuesday performing the ceremony.
General Motors announces a new Imperial Laundau Sedan Chevrolet model goes on sale this week with the first unit on display at Higginbotham Brothers and Company. The black car features red disc wheels and a refined appearance aiming to rival high priced automobiles.
Higginbotham Bros. and Company moved into a new garage on a southwest corner property in Comanche early this week. The new building, largest after the city’s main store, offers expansive showrooms, ample parking, a spacious work room and a drive in service station, all designed for extensive sales, repair and service operations.
J. D. Beaty of Comanche route 4 presented a turkey egg measuring 7 1 2 inches by 9 1 4 inches in our office Monday. The large egg drew notice for its size and unusual dimensions.
A large county meeting of Comanche County 4-H clubs gathered at the Methodist tabernacle with over 300 members. Dean Davis of John Tarleton College spoke, followed by poultry expert Elizabeth Temple who led songs and energized the crowd. New officers were elected Mackey Johnson president Weldon Jones vice president Lilian Stewart secretary Naomi Johnson reporter. County Agent J A Barton announced a summer encampment mid July and a short course at A and M College in late July plus a Dallas trip in October. The group then toured the county exhibit on the north side of the square where Temple and the others spoke on scientific farming.
