School Board Reaffirms Staff for 1939 40 Term

The local school board in regular session re elected current faculty and filled all vacancies for the 1939 40 year. All have accepted assignments and expect to begin in September except Miss Ola Cunningham who retires after the present term. The board sets August 1 as contract release deadline with two exceptions Physical disability or matrimony.

Mrs Ivey McClean Dies In California

Mrs Ivey Grace McClean 38 of 523 Fairmont Avenue died last Sunday in California after a long illness. She was a native of Comanche Texas and Howard Payne College graduate who taught dramatics in Texas public schools for three years. She leaves husband Cyril W McClean of Oakland two sons Mary Juanita Maudel and Margaret McClean mother Mrs Hill Huddleston sister Mrs Juanita Lee brother Owsley Huddleston. Funeral services were held Monday at the First Baptist Church in Oakland.

Wilkersons Visit Buffalo Friends Attend Shower

Roch and Mrs. J. R. Wilkerson and family of Buffalo spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Johnson and Charles Guy. A miscellaneous shower for Mrs. Minnie Johnson was held Monday with about thirty women attending. Cake and iced tea were served.

County Schools Receive over $79,000 in State Aid

The Comanche County schools have received up to date 70 113 from the State Legislature for the 1938 39 term. Fifty percent of the approved amount for transportation and teachers salaries plus part of per capita money have been paid. The State Department of Education is paying 80 percent transportation and 78 percent salary aid for 1938 39. The Emergency Rural Aid Bill will raise salaries deficit for 1937 38 from 69 percent to 92 percent. These payments will likely be mailed from Austria in about three weeks.

District Wild Flower Show at Brownwood

The District Wild Flower Show, sponsored by the State Highway Department, Division 23, will be held Wednesday and Thursday May 16 and 17 at Memorial Hall in Brownwood. The exhibit will include varieties from Brown, Comanche, Coleman, Eastland, Lampasas, McCulloch, Mills and San Saba Counties with Erick Matthews in charge of labeling and arrangement. Porter McCarroll notes the aim to display as many wild flower varieties as possible.

Biggs Attends Goodyear Meeting in Abilene

J C Biggs owner of Biggs Auto Parts attended the Goodyear spring dealer convention in Abilene. He spoke on rubber industry growth from Charles Goodyear vulcanization to Akron centennial events and announced a May 18 start for a 10 day Centennial Jubilee sale, with advertising in The Chief. Hasse Youth Sets Scholastic Record for Early Graduation

George Cecil Hanes son of Mrs Benna Davis of Hasse and W T Hanes of Memphis Texas graduates Comanche High School in eight terms at age 15 after starting school in Dallas at seven. His move to Hasse in 1932 and double promotions led to a mid term promotion then a reunion to ensure proper age for graduation. His brother Thomas was valedictorian of the 1938 Hasse class, also finishing in eight terms after missing 1931 due to illness.
