Hayes 19 of Energy is convalescing at a U S Army general hospital in England after being wounded on the left side by fragments from a German hand grenade during an attack through Siegfried line defenses. He was awarded the Purple Heart after the injury and the unit was pinned down by mortar and artillery fire.

Local Soldier to Return to Duty After France Service
