Vegetables Good Buys
Prices for vegetables ease to low levels as two weeks of declines end. Mrs. Gwendolyne Clyatt of Texas Agricultural Extension Service notes onions up 18 percent this year but three to four times cheaper, with prices for cabbage, carrots, broccoli, squash, greens, radishes and green onions appealing. Seasonal fruit supplies rise. cantaloupe and strawberries become cheaper while pineapple peaks pass. Watermelons plentiful but pricey, apples bananas oranges avocados honeydew moderate. Fryer chickens bargain. eggs cheap, beef prices steady with best values in roasts steaks and liver. Pork prices favor shoulder roasts and hams. Fresh cabbage remains a low-cost staple for hot or cold use.
