Baylor University’s Humble Founding in Texas History
The Texas frontier saw pioneers build Baylor University from nothing to a major institution. Led by Rev. Dr. William M. Tryon and Judge Baylor, the venture began with a Texas Baptist Education Society chartered in 1841 and evolved after 1845 under Dr. Rufus C. Burleson. Independence, Washington County, hosted the opening in 1846 with 24 preparatory students, later expanding under a stringent model and planned campus growth.
