Sixteen Couples Obtain Licenses Here To Marry

County Clerk Mrs. Mary Elds reports a brisk marriage license business in Comanche with sixteen licenses issued in two weeks. The list includes J. W. Montgomery and Audrey Mae Clements in Comanche on July 12, plus numerous couples married by local judges, pastors, and ministers at Comanche and nearby towns.

Durham Opens Blackeyed Pea Canning Plant

The Durham Pecan and Peanut Company starts a blackeyed pea canning plant in Comanche with daily operation except Sundays. Walter Durham notes market price paid is high and peas are accepted until 9 pm. experts from Dallas and New Orleans approved the product. Growers are asked to shell peas with 25 percent snaps, keep snaps tender, and package in pasteboard cartons bags or metal containers. shelled peas kept separate from snaps.

Officer Recovers Stolen Car After One Mile Chase

State Patrolman Wilson captured two Gonzales youths after chasing a stolen 1941 Ford for more than twelve miles from Victoria to Comanche. The car had been stolen Friday and a Brownwood service station attendant reported the unpaid gasoline, prompting the pursuit that ended near the Wade Eridge residence in Comanche. The youths were jailed in Comanche County before transfer to Brownwood.

Old Settlers to Gather at Lake Eanes Park for Reunion

Old settlers from across the county and Texas plus guests from other states will attend the Thirty Fourth Annual Reunion of Omance County Old Settlers and Pioneers at Lake Eanes Park on Thursday and Friday. A county wide singing features the event with quartets from nearby counties expected. The new tabernacle will be finished for the gathering and Lake Eanes becomes the permanent location with ample seating and shade.

A community meeting is planned for Monday night July 21 to organize the first show and festival queen contest. Organizers invite all interested to attend and help select a queen candidate while noting plans for free entertainment, radio ads, and upcoming market advertising. Comanche County Livestock Association directors and all committee chairmen are called to meet at eight o'clock Wednesday night July 23 in the Chamber of Commerce room. Kirk Well Makes 40 Barrels Daily

The Kirk oil well on Frank Kirk tract between Duster and Sipe Springs three miles from Sipe Springs gushed Saturday July 5 at about 5 38 PM sending crude oil over the derrick and soaking nearby cars. Initial estimates put production at 150 to 200 barrels per day once acidized and under control as two storage tanks receive the flow. The rig began about six weeks ago near a previously drilled well that was plugged due to low petroleum prices.
