Winter Irrigating Profitable for Cover Crops and Cattle
SCS irrigation helps establish fall and winter cover crops for cattle feed. Cooperators like Bertayes, Bus ter McDonald, Elton McDonald irrigate yearly and apply fertilizer to boost growth of small grain over crops. A cooperator used 2 percent irrigation on 38 acres for pumping costs of sixty dollars after 7.1 inches of rain on October 26, with irrigation around November 26. By December moisture was ample after removing two inches of topsoil. The Upper Leon Soil Conservation District cooperator runs 81 cattle on 50 acres of rye, vetch and oats and may earn fifty dollars per acre from irrigated crops with proper know-how. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Brown and daughters from Houston visited Mrs. Brown's parents over the weekend.
