Intervenors Stricken From Comanche ISD Tax Suit

In 52nd District Court Judge Byron McClellan disqualified about 72 taxpayers seeking intervenor status in a tax suit against the Comanche Independent School District. The move follows a long dispute stemming from 21 taxpayers who won a temporary injunction halting 1970 tax collections set by the district board of equalization. The original plaintiffs won a temporary injunction whose final hearing date is not yet set. The district board has also hired a professional evaluation firm to assess property values in the district.

Over 5 000 Register To Vote In County

Comanche County reports over five thousand residents registered for voting before the January 31 deadline. Official counts show 5 392 certificates issued, with April elections planned in local school trustee races for the county board across De Leon Gustine and Sidney districts. A statewide May vote may include a proposed Texas Constitution amendment if legislative action proceeds.

Comanche County Livestock Association to Meet

The Comanche County Live stock Association sponsors of the local Junior Livestock Show will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday night February 9 at 7 30 p m at the Comanche County Courthouse. President Daymond Power says the meeting is open to all members to discuss the 1971 show plan the 1972 show and elect officers and directors for the new year. The association also thanks those who helped make the local Junior Livestock Show a success.

Sabanna River Project Advances Flood Control Plan

The Sabanna River watershed improvement project moves toward reality with a meeting in German last week. Officials from the Soil Conservation Service outlined surveys and planning needed to speed progress, with the first elevation survey set for mid March and data collection to guide final water control structures owned and operated by local landowners and sponsors.

The Gene Gilbreath family of Edna Hill is named State Farm Home Family of the Year in Comanche County and will be honored at a banquet February 19 at PAR Country Club. Comanche Dublin and De Leon Chambers of Commerce members will participate, with a plaque to be presented by the Comanche Chamber of Commerce. Population in Comanche County Rises Slightly in 1970 Census

Comanche County shows a population of 11,898 in the 1970 census, according to U S Census Bureau final figures. The gain over 1960’s 11,865 is 33 persons, indicating only a small increase.

Comanche Volunteer Fire Department Busy in 1970

Fire Marshal Nowlin reports CVFD logged 177 calls in 1970 with 91 rural grass fires and 27 city grass and trash fires. The department responded to 21 house and burn calls, 17 vehicle fires, and five false alarms, plus a missing person search and a drowning search. Trucks covered 1,555 miles and about 40,000 gallons of water were used. roughly 395 acres of grass and pasture burned.

Proctor Moves Toward Dry Status After Court Ruling

A court order from the Court of Civil Appeals follows the Texas Supreme Court ruling to declare Proctor area dry. County officials will act then the Liquor Control Board will order cessation of beer wine and liquor sales in Proctor. Final action anticipated Friday.

Noon Lions Club Organized Here

A new Lions Club the Comanche Noon Lions Club was organized this week. Wayne Pinkerton was elected president and Jim Roberts secretary. The club will meet each Tuesday noon at the Golden Arrow Cafeteria and adjourn by 1 p.m. Interested individuals are urged to attend the first regular meeting Tuesday February 9.

Comanche to Elect New Mayor in April Election

Incumbent Gyale Pirkie will not seek re election after four terms. City election set for April 3 to choose mayor and two council members. Bill Jones and James Mercer terms expire. Mercer runs again while Jones declines. Clarence Schwartz has filed for mayor and others may file with City Hall.

Date Set For Measles Vaccine Distribution at Elementary School

The Red Measles vaccine will be available free of charge to elementary and pre school children at the Elementary School Library on Wednesday February 10 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. It will be administered under doctor supervision with the school nurse and State Health Department. Eligible groups include kindergarten through fifth grade from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and preschool children age 1 through 4 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Some children with certain medical conditions or allergies should not receive the vaccine.

Tax appraisers for the Cosmanche Independent School District have spent weeks measuring houses in the city to determine size structure type and age for tax valuation. The team will continue for several months until all district homes are surveyed, and residents are asked to cooperate with the project.
