Postage Hike Proposed to Shore Up Postal Finances

Postmaster Jim Carpenter outlined proposed 1972 postal rate increases aimed at stabilizing finances by shifting costs to mail users. The plan, submitted Feb 1 to the Rate Commission, would raise most categories including letters and second class, with a five year phased rollout. a temporary rise could take effect if the commission does not meet 90 day deadlines. Airmail and priority rates would also rise, while parcels under 5 pounds would see notable increases.

School Holiday Set for Comanche Students

Comanche School district announces a holiday for students on Monday February 15 while teachers attend In-Service training. Teachers will hold meetings within buildings and departments and plan programs for the future.

Daymond Power was re elected president at the annual meeting in Comanche February 6. New officers include Gayle Mahan as 1st vice president Bill Blue as 2nd vice president Jerry Conway treasurer and Charles Dudley secretary. Directors serving three year terms are Robert Williams Pay Seth Mathis Mack Morgan and Roger Murphree. The 1971 Junior Livestock Show was discussed with plans for 1972. Building costs total 27037 30 while the association owes 14000 on the new livestock center and 342 members are counted this year.

Heart Month Drives Heart Association Fund Drive

Mrs E Arthur outlines Heart Month from February to month end with Heart Dollar allocations for research public health education and training community services fundraising and management. Donations since 1959 have cut death rates under age 65 by about three percent. Programs support prevention diagnosis treatment and rehabilitation including rheumatic fever stroke rehab heart attack risk reduction and school screening.

Gene Gilbreath Family To Be Honored February 19

The Gene Gilbreath family of the Edna Hill community in Comanche County will be honored at an award dinner February 19 at 7:30 p.m. at PAR Country Club. State agricultural leaders and FHA officials will attend, with tickets priced at $2.59 available through the Comanche Chamber of Commerce and FHA offices. The Gilbreath family was chosen as the outstanding 1970 Texas Farm Family of the Year, with National selection to be announced next month.

Amendment Special Election Scheduled for May Ballot

Four constitutional amendments approved in overtime sessions set a May 18 statewide election. SJR 15 would create an official ethics commission and set pay. SJR 5 would remove the aid cap for the aged and raise AFDC limits. SJR 17 seeks a $100 million bond for local water treatment. HJR 21 allows future amendments in special sessions. First on the ballot is SJR 15, then HJR 21, SJR 5, and SJR 17. Governor Smith’s school land income proposal failed. Budget and revenue discussions continue without immediate tax reform.

Indians Travel To Cisco For Final 1970-71 Game

Comanche basketball ends the season in Cisco Friday night with two beam ball games. The B team plays at 7:00 followed by the A team. Final games mark the ending for seven players Efferson Elliott Ronnie Shaw Glen Parker David Hutchins Jerry Gore Kevin Braziel and Richard Barret. Local fans urged to back the Indians.

Registration for Voting Extended Through February

Voter registration reopened at the county courthouse after emergency legislation signed by the governor extending registration through February. Applications accepted in person or by mail for adults 18 and over, with 18 to 20 year olds limited to federal elections. 5,392 registrations already issued before January 31 deadline.

Gustine-Priddy Clash for District Title Friday Night

Gustine Tigers vs Priddy Pirates meet at the local gym Friday Feb 12 at 8:00 to decide the District champion and state playoff berth. Gustine led by Alan Luker 126 points and Don Hopper pacing Priddy with 106 points. Gustine seeks district revenge after a 45 44 win in the first meeting. The Priddy girls also play Planket in a 6:30 practice session before the main game with admission set at 1.00.
