Omar Burleson introduces a measure to require a registered nurse on duty at small rural hospitals. The bill H.R. 19470 passed the House on December 22 and the Senate on January 2, awaiting the President's signature. The proposal allows HEW Secretary discretion to waive the requirement year by year for five years, citing hardship for Medicare patients in rural areas and the impracticality of immediate full standards.
