A limestone spreader owned by an Illinois bank was rented to farmers for ten cents a ton and a phosphate spreader for five cents a ton. The bank led the “limestone project” as its main banker-farmer effort in 1930, with Farm Bureau cooperation. A soil tester mapped forty acre unit areas with 23 surface tests at precise points and five other points with three tests each. The map used red shading to show where limestone was needed.
