Third Annual Comanche County Sheep and Goat Show Planned

Pure bred sheep and goats breeders in Comanche County have reserved pens for the September 7 event in Comanche. The committee aims to make the show the best yet with demonstrations in wool and mutton breeding, feeder lamb judging, and a three-animal get of sire class open to sheep and goats. Health Crusade Administers Typhoid Vaccine at High School

Sixty three people including several adults received the first dose of typhoid serum at the high school as part of a county Health Crusade led by Dr. J O Lane and Miss Jean Dunnett. A second dose will be offered next Thursday between 10 and 12 AM with a 30 cent charge for all three doses.

Bank chiefs forecast better times for Comanche area in September

John B. Chilton of the Comanche National Bank and E. K. B. Anthony of the First State Bank say Comanche County will see a return to normalcy by September as debts are paid and fewer new ones arise. They note abundant food stores, traded surpluses, and a shift from cotton income to diversified farming, with harvests sustaining residents through winter.

Rainfall in Comanche Far Behind Last Year During August

Up to August 18 Comanche saw limited rainfall with the last measurable shower on June 14 at 1.28 inches. July contributed 0.69 inches, yet total for the year remains 16.89 inches, over three inches above 1980. The 1931 and 1980 monthly comparisons show sparse precip in several months as Oscar Kilpatrick and family visit the area.

Plan One Cat Variety For This County

The first Comanche County meeting to plan one variety of oats for the county was held at the Court House. About thirty five farmers attended representing the county trade area and discussed Nortex, an oat developed at Denton Experiment Station. Nortex has averaged 98 bushels per acre over six years, about 25 bushels more than other oats, with 20,000 bushels grown countywide last year. The group aims to start this year by distributing seed oats for planting as breed seed.

Home Lost In Midnight Blaze In Texas Town

A midnight fire destroyed the two story frame home of W. A. Hellum, occupied by W. H. Huett and family, with Hilbert Huett and junior Wood escaping. The blaze damaged adjoining properties but firefighters halted spread as the house, built by the late Uncle Billy Carroll, burned to the ground. The family was visiting Erath County except for those inside. The cause remains undetermined and insurance partially covered the loss.

Contract Let For Filling Station

A contract was let this week by Mrs. R. E. Blue to Tip Ross of Gorman for the construction of a modern brick service station for the Gulf Refining Company which has taken a ten year lease on the station. The building will cost about £3000 and sit on the east end of the lot across from the Fire Station on Highway 10. Workmen began cleaning the lot Monday and construction is expected to begin next week for service by September.
