Citizens oppose county school groupings and consolidation as G H Moore and O H Moore announce a district court room gathering at 3 PM on Thursday August 27 in Comanche County. Delegates from DeLeon and twelve rural schools attended the DeLeon meeting urging reevaluation of grouping plans.
The first Comanche County meeting to plan one variety of oats for the county was held at the Court House. About thirty five farmers attended representing the county trade area and discussed Nortex, an oat developed at Denton Experiment Station. Nortex has averaged 98 bushels per acre over six years, about 25 bushels more than other oats, with 20,000 bushels grown countywide last year. The group aims to start this year by distributing seed oats for planting as breed seed.
J L Wilson offers to buy a truck load of tomatoes in any amount. Tomatoes must be ripe enough but not overripe, with pink varieties preferred. Bring offers to Durham Brothers Friday morning August 21, as organized by W H Carpenter secretary of the Chamber of Commerce.
P C Barnes manager of Et Cit on Et Cit on The Tasty Food Products Company in Brownwood says the plant has paused black eyed pea canning to fulfill existing contracts. He notes sales trends are strong and expects activity to pick up by September 1. The new product has received a splendid public response and may become a major line.
Garland Hobson was arrested Thursday at his home near Downing on an alleged liquor charge by Deputy Sheriff Turner Sanders City Marshall W A Pate and County Attorney F O Jaye He was released Friday under a 1500 bond to await grand jury action Liquor and empties were found at the residence according to officers.
The I O F Lee Club and other children from the Odd Fellows Home in Corsicana will present a miscellaneous program at the Como nache High School auditorium Thursday evening August 27 starting at 8 15. No admission fee is charged and the public is invited.
A midnight fire destroyed the two story frame home of W. A. Hellum, occupied by W. H. Huett and family, with Hilbert Huett and junior Wood escaping. The blaze damaged adjoining properties but firefighters halted spread as the house, built by the late Uncle Billy Carroll, burned to the ground. The family was visiting Erath County except for those inside. The cause remains undetermined and insurance partially covered the loss.
L Pierce of Shire Texas seeks a comrade sent to Camp Mabry September 18 1918. The Comanche Chief April 20 1918 shows Louis J Stephens sent to Camp Mabry for auto mechanics. Pierce ill with flu waited for contact.
A contract was let this week by Mrs. R. E. Blue to Tip Ross of Gorman for the construction of a modern brick service station for the Gulf Refining Company which has taken a ten year lease on the station. The building will cost about £3000 and sit on the east end of the lot across from the Fire Station on Highway 10. Workmen began cleaning the lot Monday and construction is expected to begin next week for service by September.
