Woodcock says Ford strike may last longer than two weeks

UAW Chief Leonard Woodcock cautioned the 170000 Ford workers in a nationwide walkout may exceed a two week duration. He noted no negotiations were set and predicted continued impact on production and the economy, with analysts expecting effects to ripple into steel and tire industries.

Bike Races Set For Pawnee Discover Columbus Days

Terry Anderson announced the Discover Columbus Days Bike Races will be on Sunday October 10 starting at 1 30 p m in the Pawnee Park Area. Riders meet at the Pawnee Park Swimming Pool lot before 1 30 p m with three age groups racing 5 10 and 15 miles and cash prizes for the top three plus medals for all.

Cooper Nuclear Station to Close for Refueling and Repairs

The Nebraska Public Power District will shut Cooper Nuclear Station at Brownville for partial refueling and final repairs to fix a vibration problem first noticed in 1975. The plant will be out until November 15, refueling about 20 percent of 548 fuel assemblies with uranium dioxide fuel costing about 8 million dollars.

Veto Overridden Increases for Columbus City Officials

Columbus city council voted 7-0 to override Mayor Fred Gerber's Sept veto and grant salary raises for councilmen from 1800 to 2400 and for the mayor from 2400 to 3600. Raises take effect Dec 1 with new terms. none of the officials received earlier raises despite others getting 3 to 10 percent increases. Les Pillen was absent. Pillen and Jerry Micek dissented on Sept 1.
