Settlement to put 65 million in pension fund Omaha

Douglas County District Judge Samuel Caniglia approved a settlement to put more than 65 million dollars into the Omaha police and firemen's pension fund over the next 60 years. The plan may raise property taxes and now goes to the city council for approval. If rejected, a trial is set for September 22. Finance Director George Richardson said approval might come only because trial could yield no better terms. He noted taxpayers could oppose a fund solvency that is not critical until 2020 and questioned government role in funding pensions.
