Arrest murder suspect in Baltimore standoff
Police arrested murder suspect William Baker after a two hour siege in a west Baltimore row house. He held three hostages and fired at officers, then released them and surrendered at 6 20 a m after promising to come out with daylight. No injuries were reported.

Ethiopia says pirates down two Somali jets in Ogaden war
Ethiopia claims it shot down two more Somali MiG 21 fighters as part of a two day, five aircraft victory in the Ogaden desert conflict. Addis Ababa Radio quoted a war communique saying the planes crossed into Ethiopia to back Somali troops and were downed while en route to Hargeisa.

Omaha police hunt for a blue station wagon believed to have forcefully pushed a car carrying four onto the highway shoulder. Three occupants, Francis Raskovitz 22 Elizabeth Hickman 17 and Larry Ogle 25, all of Omaha, died. Debra Venable 22 of Council Bluffs Iowa survived. Jobless rate climbs to 7.1 percent in August
August unemployment rose to 7.1 percent, with blacks hit a postwar high of 14.7 percent and teenage joblessness at 40.4 percent. Total employment rose 210,000 to 90.8 million, while labor force jumped 390,000. Whites 6.1 percent, men 4.5 percent, women 6.3 percent. Service sector added 200,000 jobs, but manufacturing and construction fell for the first time since last October.

Tornadoes and torrential rain hit central Nebraska near Red Cloud
Storms lashed Nebraska and Kansas with tornadoes hail and heavy rain. Sheriff James Disney of Webster County reported a tornado five miles west of Red Cloud threatening the town of about 1 500 as sirens wailed. The National Weather Service logged 5.25 inches of rain in 24 hours in Grand Island, with other spots recording several inches. Several businesses in Grand Island sustained damage from a possible tornado while rain and hail impacted Riverton Wood River and Hed Cloud as a weather front moved southeast.

ATLANTA United Press. A new strain of pneumonia resistant to most antibiotics has been identified and is under close watch by health officials, the CDC said. It caused illnesses in Durban and spread to others but not all exposed became ill. Cases and carriers were found in Johannesburg. The CDC and State Department were notified and experts warn about possible undetectable resistant strains.
