Carter and Torrijos area youth earn meet in Oval Office

President Carter met with Omar Torrijos at the White House to discuss Senate opposition to the Panama Canal handover plans. Torrijos called the talks well organized as Carter noted the Senate fights over ratification of the canal treaties with an OAS signing ceremony planned.

United Way Drives Toward 85 150 Goal in Columbus

United Way begins its general fund drive led by Tom McKinnon with about 20 volunteers seeking donations for 14 Columbus agencies. The goal is 85,150 dollars, building on an August advance with four firms already fully contributing.

Council schedules hearings for zoning and liquor licenses

Columbus City Council meets Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Council chambers to hear a retail liquor license request from Joe and Al's IGA for off sale beer. Rezonings include Allen Wilke Husker Steak House near 8th Street and 3rd Avenue from R-2 to B-2, Mark Sipple from R-1 to B-2 near North 241 feet of West Park South Addition by 23rd Street and First Assembly of God Church. Columbus Days announces Richard Grennan will chair the Big Wheel Races Friday in Gibson’s parking lot.
