Nebraska's 1970 sweetclover seed output ranks as the third smallest on record. The State Federal Division of Agricultural Statistics estimates 1970 yield at 1,200,000 pounds, up 2 percent from last year's 1,235,000. Harvested acres around 7,000, with an estimated yield of 189 pounds per acre, down 10 pounds from last year. Nationally the crop totals about 12,035,000 pounds, up 4 percent from last year and 29 percent below two years prior.
UPI reports a new no tillage farming system that cuts production costs and reduces soil erosion by preserving crop residues. Field tests near Coshocton Ohio show soil losses falling from 7.8 to 1.5 tons per acre as farmers switch from conventional plowing to no tillage. Blakely of the Soil Conservation Service notes rapid adoption and predicts 40 to 50 percent of corn and soybean acreage may be under some form of no tillage within five years. Headway is strongest in the Midwest among corn, grain sorghums and soybeans, with potential spread nationwide.
Nebraska Livestock Foundation boards and advisory committee discussed launching a voluntary beef checkoff in Nebraska led by Dan T. 1971. Attendees included leaders from the Nebraska Livestock Feeders, Sandhills Cattle, Nebraska Cow Bolles, and Nebraska Stock Growers associations, plus form bureaus and university and industry groups. The plan aims to fund promotion through a small per head voluntary levy and anticipates regional meetings to roll out an educational program over the next three months.
The Naliany Livestock Feeders Association sponsors a Midwest Animal Waste Management Conference in Des Moines Iowa. Sessions run 10 30 am to 4 pm on Nov 10 and 9 30 am to 3 20 pm on Nov 11. Speakers include NLFA program director Carl Slarsh and others from agriculture and energy agencies.
U S Department economists warn that domestic and export soybean demand will outpace production for the 1970 71 season and call for substantially higher plantings next year to cover expected crush and export needs. With stocks dwindling, prices for 1970 crop soybeans are seen above last year’s average, and 1971 72 outlooks imply larger acreage requirements.
University of Nebraska Animal Science Department seeks cooperators to supply cattle for feedlot research. Cooperators provide at least 200 head, retain ownership while the university manages delivery and sale dates, and are paid on a cost of gain basis. Washington reports that while cigarette use per person is falling for a fourth year, economists foresee a 4 percent upturn in fiscal 1971. Cigar and smoking tobacco consumption declined to 7.1 billion in 1969, rose to 8.4 billion in 1970, and are projected to climb further in 1971. Per capita cigar use among men 18 and older has shown a rebound, though pipe tobacco trends mirror cigars.
The Motes Happy Honey Bros Club gathered at Theresa dutss Zuerlein’s home. Members filled our record books and discussed projects for the coming year. Dane Munson led the meeting and explained plans to grow the group. Treats were brought by Debbie and Shelly.
Pawnae Pisnoors AE held a reorganizational meeting with a $21.00 treasurer's report. A fun night and a bowling party were planned at the Al Kozak time with refreshments served by Mrs. Kozak.
Congressional sources indicate a 58 000 dollar cutoff for farm support payments as House and Senate negotiators seek a three year farm bill. Despite tentative accords on some programs, major gaps remain over acreage limits and eligibility for supplementary payments and price supports.
University of Nebraska plant pathologists led by Dr. John Welling and farmers at the Soybean Meld Day near Fremont study a new disease in soybeans named Plate Valley Yellow. The soil-born ailment appears after cool wet weather, causes yellowing and lil vegetation, and recovers with warm weather. experiments show treatments may help, with lab work indicating possible soil-borne origin.
