Ranger hit by two dozen acts of wartime sabotage

A Los Angeles Times report cites Navy findings that the carrier Ranger suffered about two dozen sabotage incidents from June to October. Fires, fuel contamination, wiring cuts, and gear damage plagued the ship, with fireman Patrick Chenoweth charged for a major gear destruction. Chenoweth, 21, from Puget Sound, awaits court martial at Treasure Island. The Ranger moved toward the Western Pacific, while officials note World War II style charges may be used to deter crew misconduct. Major naval incidents on other carriers were also noted.

Four Spades Triumph and Reverse Bidding Described

In a bridge analysis, North wins 12 tricks after a spade lead and West’s ace. A spade return and West’s third spade prompt South to discard three hearts on clubs and a final diamond. The hand demonstrates a modern bidding convention called the reverse, where North’s two diamond bid forces partner to a three to return to the first suit.

In 1995 Oswald and Jacoby discussed reverse bids as strong tools and now view any reverse as a one round force. With North’s no diamonds, South must rebid despite a weak hand, setting up North for a four spade call. The hand: West North East South with AQ3429K953 | A765 AD.
