Washington AP reports the U S Department of Agriculture forecasts the total cattle herd including all ages and dairy stock will reach a record near 122 million by January 1, 1973, up from 117.9 million a year earlier. Prices for fat cattle remained strong but eased from peaks, with hog output rising and pig farrowings expected to grow by seven percent.
Washington AP reports the Agriculture Department says dairy farmers are producing the most milk since 1965 with about 120.5 billion pounds this year, a third straight gain. Per capita milk consumption is projected at 6.1 pounds per dairy product, down from 5.58 pounds, signaling rising output but lagging demand.

Washington reports the shift away from feeding garbage to hogs. USDA notes only about half a million hogs are fed garbage commercially, down from 12 million in the mid-1950s. When allowed, garbage must be cooked for ten minutes and facilities are inspected monthly to prevent disease risks.
