Smokeout test draws mixed results across states
The American Cancer Society declared Thursday The Great American Smokeout to urge a 74 hour abstinence from cigarettes. Reports from San Francisco, Detroit, Alexandria and Santa Clara show varied behavior with Ashtrays full and some participants avoiding tobacco, while many smokers continued. Statewide surveys in California indicated about 38.7 percent of the estimated 5 million smokers joined the effort, roughly 1.935 million, nearly double last year’s response. Parish by parish, individuals voiced disbelief or resolve as smokeout efforts faced practical withdrawal.
