Columbus awards 242000 bid for solid waste transfer station
The Columbus City Council, in a special session, awarded a 242000 contract to B D Construction for a solid waste transfer station known as the trash compactor. B D beat Johansen Construction whose bid was 291000. Plans were trimmed, increasing costs from an initial 100000 estimate. Construction slated to start June 15, finish within 180 calendar days, funded by federal revenue sharing, with the site along the Loup River near Duncan.

Marijuana loaded plane crashes in East Tennessee
A World War III era twin engine Lockheed Lodestar loaded with about 1000 pounds of marijuana crashed after takeoff near Rockwood Airport at 3 05 am. The two aboard were killed and later autopsied at UT hospital. Cardboard boxes found near the runway suggest smuggling operations and a shuttle flight to another city. The street value of the marijuana was estimated around half a million dollars.

Two suspects are held in North Platte over an armed robbery on a Union Pacific boxcar west of Duncan Wednesday evening. William A. San Filipo of Ohio, robbed at knife point of about $60, was found injured on Highway 30 near Duncan about 4:15 a.m. A passing motorist alerted the Columbus Rescue Squad. he was taken to Behlen Community Hospital.
