Senate approves major overhaul of food stamp program
The Senate backed a two year extension and major reform of the food stamp program, making stamps free for qualified recipients and tightening eligibility. The bill would end households’ need to provide cash to obtain stamps, raise coverage, and impose work seek and disqualification rules. Estimates show 1.2 million current claimants could lose eligibility and 4.6 million more face reduced benefits, while over 10 million would maintain or gain benefits. The House works on separate farm and food stamp bills, with negotiations to resolve differences.

Podgorny Dismissed From Soviet Politburo Sparks Power Shift
Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny was abruptly removed from the Communist Party Politburo in a move that sources say could strip him of his ceremonial head of state title when the Supreme Soviet convenes June 16. Western diplomats see the action as a sign of Kremlin power realignment under Leonid Brezhnev, with potential room created at the top for Brezhnev allies. The purge follows the death of Defense Minister Grechkov in April and comes as Podgorny, long a public figure, remains active in diplomacy and regional tours. The Central Committee also approved a long-debated new constitution to replace the Stalin-era charter.

Ridgway backs Carter on Korea policy dispute
General Matthew Ridgway, recalling his 26 year old Korea command, says President Carter was entirely within his rights to relieve Maj. Gen. John Singlaub over criticism of Carter’s Korea policy. He declines to comment on Singlaub’s broader claims while noting discussions tied to phased troop withdrawals and the prior Nixon-Korea arrangements. Ridgway, 81, lives retired in Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania.
