Columbus Sentorigh Concert Band Heads to National Music Festival
The 75 member Columbus Sentorigh ensemble departs Thursday morning to compete five days in St. Louis at the National Music Festival. The group, placed in one class with 12 schools, performs Thursday evening, Friday concert, and Saturday marching. The event features 10 states and includes a Friday night concert with Maynard Ferguson.

Rooming house fire kills at least eight in Manhattan
A four alarm blaze gutted the Everard Baths, a midtown New York rooming house and sauna catering largely to homosexuals. At least eight people were killed and 10 injured, three critically, as over 100 firefighters battled the fire and 10 pieces of equipment. Investigators noted a possible earlier re ignition due to an unhooked sprinkler system.

Missouri man sentenced in nationwide mail fraud case
Willian M. Moots of Parkville Missouri, 55, received five years in prison and a $4000 fine for 18 counts of mail and wire fraud and conspiracy. He defrauded predominately middle aged women by soliciting investments in a phony jewelry business from 1972 to 1974. The judge urged leniency but warned he would “throw the book” if he reoffends.

Rainy Nebraska Forecast Keeps Thunderstorms In View
Scattered thundershowers and thunderstorms were in the Nebraska forecast through the weekend. Partly cloudy skies and warm conditions were expected to continue into Friday. A warm moist southerly air flow blanketed the state with winds up to 30 mph in central Nebraska. Hershey Nebraska voters rejected a bond measure to fund a new elementary school worth 1.2 million dollars. The referendum failed by a margin of 25 votes in the close town 20 miles west of North Platte.
