Platte College reports robust early pre-registration for summer 1975 with over 22 students and strong fall signups already at 425. Several fall classes nearing capacity, prompting early closures. Students are urged to apply or preregister soon, with Student Services handling inquiries. Summer registration and fee payment set for May 27 30 with extended evening hours.
Lindsay Manufacturing Company awards two scholarships for the 1975-76 academic year at Platte College. One is competitive for local-area residents entering Platte College this fall. the recipient is Danet Wiese, Lindsay Holy Family High School graduate active in NHS, class treasurer, pep club, and Who's Who. The second scholarship funds children of Lindsay employees attending Platte College full time. applicants should contact Platte’s Den of Students office.
The Nebraska legislature sent LB417 to Gov. Exon for his anticipated veto. The bill would replace Lincoln’s men’s reformatory with a 20 percent inmate facility expandable to 250, begin next fiscal year, and create an Omaha unit of about 1,720 inmates. Costs are capped at 5 million and 4 million dollars respectively.
United Press International reports pleasant summer conditions across Nebraska with warmer temperatures expected through Saturday. Skies were clear at midday with upper sixties to low seventies readings. highs Thursday ranged from 72 in North Omaha to 87 in Scottsbluff and Chadron. Tonight may bring isolated western thundershowers, but overall fair skies and warming temperatures prevail.
A chain of crashes after a truck struck the Skinner car left a nine year old boy dead and the parents severely injured. Ricky 4 Debbie 3 were burned and taken to Schuyler Memorial Hospital with their mother and father. Tammy 8 was unharmed. Drivers identified include Harold Hood 41 of Cozad and others from Schuyler Tumphrey and Columbus. The Dodge County attorney said Debbie was pulled from the back seat and all others assisted from the wreckage.
Columbus Senior High announces 215 candidates for graduation at commencement in the gym May 19 at 7 pm with Dr. Donald C. Clifton of Lincoln as guest speaker. Baccalaureate is May 44 at 8 pm in the auditorium. Lists the candidates alphabetically, including David Abegglen, Allen Aerni, Sandra Aerni, Rockey Aldredge, Kerry Aldrich, Michael All, and many others.
UPI reports a U S casualty list from Cambodia noting dead and wounded, with 13 missing. Washington dispatch says U S aircraft conducted a second bombing raid on the Cambodian mainland about a half hour after the first airstrike.
Nebraska April unemployment falls to 5.7 percent from 6.4 percent in March as 41,935 Nebraskans are jobless. Omaha drops to 7.3 percent, Lincoln steady, with manufacturing and services adding workers while government remains steady. Mayaguez incident unfolds in Vietnam era crisis. U S actions cited.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger defended the Mayaguez operation as needed to save American lives and warned limits exist beyond which the United States cannot be pushed. He reaffirmed defense commitments to South Korea and signaled a cooperative review of ties with Thailand while denying any eagerness for conflict after Vietnam. The incident may have stemmed from a local command decision, not a master plan, Kissinger said as Congress praised the Mayaguez recapture and crew rescue.
In 1972 the Post Office Department considered Pleasant Valley for a Platte County post office but revised the name to Farrall to honor Thomas Farrall, the first postmaster. The facility stood two miles northwest of Lindsay, about 27 air miles from Columbus, and operated until mail service moved to Newman Grove in 1884.
Two women from Columbus and Leigh were rescued from an island on the Platte River after a dusk accident during training for the Platte River Raft Regatta. Beverly Engelmann, 21, and Sandy Hiller, 19, were located by Schuyler Civil Defense and Colfax County officers late at night, appearing uninjured but shaken and wet.
