Money shortages slow airlift of Vietnamese refugees
Government officials say lack of funds slows the resettlement of Vietnamese refugees from Pacific bases to the United States. Congress weighs Ford's $507 million request, cut to $405 million after a revised refugee count. Senate action may lag as lawmakers propose a $127 million 90 day plan and demand justification for more funds. Meanwhile interagency orders reduce arrivals from Guam and Wake Island, though capacities remain enough for the short term.

Lighter Side cartoon riffs on Vietnam defeat versus Uncle Sam
In a humorous column, Dick West compares the Vietnam outcome to a boxing match where Uncle Sam is billed as heavyweight fighting a flyweight. The piece jokes that the U S was not knocked out but handicapped by opponents and rules, leaving Sam frustrated yet ready to continue global confrontations. The tidal shoreline of Louisiana is given as a quirky closing line.
