Family influence fuels upstart artist Scott Schwartz

Scott Schwartz, 20, credits his father Clayton Schwartz and his home environment for shaping his art. Self taught with limited formal training, he paints oil portraits and fire scenes, sketches, cartoons, and illustration. He contributed to Columbus High program covers and school papers, and his Ford cartoon ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Benefit Dance for Cystic Fibrosis in Columbus

A benefit dance titled Breath of Life will be held tonight at Columbus Senior High Gymnasium to aid cystic fibrosis efforts. Jockey and state CF chair Jimmy ONeill will spin records, with tickets $1.25 in advance and $1.50 at the door. Also today Columbus conducts a door to door canvassing as the week long CF drive concludes.

Remembering Platte County’s early surveyors and a fading Irish parish

Honors Given At Scotus High Recognitions Highlighted

Scotus High held a Friday afternoon honors convocation at Scotts Central Catholic, presenting many scholarships and awards. Recipients included Lynne Duren with a $2000 four year Platte County Agricultural Society scholarship, Ronald Miksch a $400 Platte College award, and Dan Steiner a full Nebraska football scholarship among numerous department and class honors across academics athletics and service.

UNL graduates include five with high distinction in Columbus area

Five University of Nebraska Lincoln students were honored at morning commencement in the NU Coliseum with high distinction, including Jerome Schulz and Mary Ruth Woodrick from Columbus. The group also featured Barbara Larson, Mary Jane Cech, and Gale Muller with further degrees across fields such as chemistry, English, accounting, education, and educational psychology. Chancellor Zumberge presided as about 2,100 degrees were conferred to graduates from multiple colleges and programs.

Beeton Dickinson Scholarships Honor Platte College Winners

Beeton Dickinson Scholarships have been awarded to Cindy Carr and Gary Bredehoft of Columbus for study at Platte College. Indy Carr, daughter of Hulda Barr, is active in Columbus music and leadership roles. Gary Bredehoft, son of Theodore and Carol Bredehoft, plans to major in drafting and has multiple local awards. The award marks Platte College’s first year recognizing occupational studies in these scholarships and notes ongoing support since 1969.
