Omaha Nebraska stock market prices show hogs up to 75 higher with strong demand for 47 head ranges, sows up to 80 higher, cattle and calves quiet with limited slaughter trade and feeder supplies. Estimated receipts Monday include 6000 cattle and calves, 7000 hogs, and 1000 sheep.
Marines earned the nickname Leathernecks from the black leather collars once worn as part of the uniform. The collars protected wearers against sabers and cutlasses, giving rise to the term in Marine corps history.
Morys Haven announces an open house on Sunday May 1 from 1 30 to 3 30 p m with refreshments for visitors. Week long activities include card games bingo and contests as part of National Nursing Home Week. Governor Exon proclaims May 13 20 as Nebraska Nursing Home Week and urges visits. Mrs Exon named honorary chairwoman.

Washington reports Deputy Treasury Secretary William Simon told Senate Banking Committee that fuel shortages will occur this summer but not be critical. He cited a volunteer import plan for agriculture and said independent heaters will receive a share of supply, while inventories are about 12 percent below normal and could cover three days without reserves. Simon said the administration aims to ensure adequate Midwest fuel supply.
Lincoln Neb AP The legislature's Committee to Committees sent to the full body the question of George Egermayer of Omaha serving on the State College Board of Trustees. The panel declined to recommend confirmation and sent the matter forward after failed motions. The nomination failed to reach seven votes for action. one vote short in the later motion. Several members questioned Egermayer's support for upgrading the college system and criticized his past views.
CHAMPION Neb AP Vilas Smith on his Cham pion farm operates twin engine Beechcraft and single engine Cessna in two hangars. He flies for business 90 percent, hauling cattle, buying 600 heifers from Texas then returning home in hours. Smith has owned 15 planes since 1938, using air travel to check stock and reach sales faster.
Glenn Kreuscher Nebraska Director of Agriculture will speak at the Platte County Livestock Feeders Association Businessmen Feeder Meeting on May 21 at Klub 81. The event starts at 8 30 with a smorgasbord. Kreuscher will brief the group on the latest agricultural and livestock legislation in the state. Each feeder should bring a businessman as a guest.
Poppy Day set here May 17 with American Legion Auxiliary volunteers on streets and at Superworkers to distribute handmade poppies crafted by hospitalized veterans. Poppies aid veteran rehabilitation and child welfare, donated materials provided, no sale, contributions fund programs. Kentucky's Department of Corrections uses 970 law to transfer troublesome prisoners to other states, with several bound for Missouri.
Columbus Nou Cus sponsors a five day charity garage sale at Ty Street and Zui Avenue near the former Interstate Glass building. Open daily 9 a m to 9 p m with home baked goods coffee and varies items from clothing household goods and tools. Proceeds aid the blind and other Lions programs including eyeglasses clinics and low vision services. Volunteers and donors are urged to contact Ray Pronty to donate or arrange pickup.
Eugene Engelbert was named Knight of the Month by Knights of Columbus Council 938. He serves as chief counselor of the John J. Kennedy Squire Circle and has been active in the organization for several years. He and his family are members of St. Anthony Church.
Silver Creek will award diplomas to 2 percent of seniors and 23 eighth grade graduates during Monday graduation. Dr. Scott Nortout of the University of Nebraska will speak. Baccalaureate services are set for 6 p.m. Sunday.
