Farm bill approval aims to stabilize prices and subsidies
The Senate committee advanced a farm bill setting established prices for wheat corn and cotton at 70 percent of parity with dairy priced at 80 percent. If market prices fall below established levels the government pays the difference. if markets rise, subsidies curb costs. Prices would be reviewed over five years. dairy terms valid one year. Senator Herman Talmadge said the plan could minimize taxpayer costs if markets grow, but shift risk to the government and farmers if projections fail.

Krogh Threat to Destroy Opponents Echoes Nixon Era
AP reports former Nixon official Krogh resigned amid Watergate ties after a widely quoted threat to destroy anyone opposing Nixon policies. The incident involved debates over a permanent White House narcotics office and the broader misuses of power. Dr Daniel Freedman, psychiatry chair at the University of Chicago, confirmed the 1970 remark and recalled his own unease about the language. The piece traces how legislation granting authority over dangerous drugs was shaped by conflicts among officials and lawmakers.
