An eight member Columbus City Council defeated a motion to allow an on sale beer license at the city’s golf course. The discussion centered on funding for course improvements and enforcement of the city ordinance prohibiting alcohol on public property.
The Safety Committee led by City Administrator Lloyd Castner will review traffic and pedestrian safety near Highland Park Elementary and other schools. The panel will assess crosswalks on Howard Boulevard, loading zones, and school routes, with input from public and parochial representatives.
A 30 minute White House meeting involved Callaway amid Justice Department probe over possible influence to obtain federal land for a Colorado ski resort. CAB also investigates charter flights linked to the resort. Attendees included White House counsel Edward Schmalz and Jerris Leonard, Callaway's lawyer.
In Lincoln Nebraska lawmakers agreed to postpone for at least a day a decision on pursuing a regional veterinary medicine school for five states Nebraska North Dakota South Dakota Wyoming and Montana. Senator George Burrows urged the move asking Governor Exon to proceed.
US Attorney James Browning argued Patricia Hearst’s account of coercion was a fabrication. He noted she did not surrender voluntarily, suggesting she acted under no force during the Hibernia Bank robbery and related events. He cited photographs and audio tape as corroboration and questioned the defense claim of duress.
In London, over 1,000 police and armed plainclothes officers patrolled trains and subways to halt bombings. Parcels and bags were searched as bombs had earlier exploded injuring eight and another device was defused in Belfast. A Protestant pub murder in Belfast raised sectarian violence concerns as rights groups condemned armed officers on transit.
