Education body to seek deficiency appropriation

The Nebraska Unicameral Education Committee voted to avoid a special session and to seek a deficiency appropriation in 1977 to cover 2.5 million dollars in missing state aid to local schools. About 75 thousand dollars of interest would be available to districts with no cash reserves. Governor Exon supported the deficiency request, noting no 2.5 million exists in the general fund.

Delighted Day as High Ridge Brings Pleasant Nebraska Weather

United Press International reports today's delightful weather from a high pressure ridge spanning the Dakota and Nebraska regions. Sunny skies push temperatures into the mid sixties in western areas and around seventy in the southeast with winds from the south and northeast. Overnight lows dip to the 40s and 50s, while a warming trend is expected through today.

Senate defeats throwaway ban on drink containers

The Senate rejected a five cent per can and bottle tax plan to curb throwaway drink containers and ban the flip top opener within five years. Hatfield led the effort citing environmental waste. opponents warned of job loss and higher prices.

Deputies Nab Two Chasers in Platte County Incidents

Two men face charges after separate pursuits by county Deputy LeRoy Waddell. Rick Brashear, 26, Newton Kansas, is charged with unlawful flight to avoid arrest while operating a motor vehicle. Dale Kumpf, 20, Leigh, is held on unlawful flight to avoid arrest and related offenses after a high speed chase near Creston ended with a vehicle in a ditch.

Right-wing forces seize Jisr al Pasha Palestinian camp

In Beirut the Jisr al Pasha refugee camp fell after an assault by about 6000 fighters with 100 tanks ending an eight day siege. Arab League envoy tried mediation but cease fire collapsed as fighting raged and casualties rose to 237 dead and 444 wounded.

Schuyler Council approves 8 percent city salary hike

Schuyler City Council approves an 8 percent pay raise for all full time city workers in the 1976 77 budget. The council sets $254 760 for the general fund and about $120 000 for Bond Retirement. A year end cash reserve of about $15 000 is planned. The new fiscal year begins August 1. In other news extreme heat and a 41 degree low were reported in New York and Klamath Falls Oregon.
