Senate moves to extend tax withholding rates past July Fourth

The Senate voted to extend income tax withholding rates to prevent a rise, if the House acts quickly the current lower rates would stay through Sept 1. The measure, attached to a minor bill, preserves a 50 percent cap on unearned income and ties to the July Fourth holiday and a Democratic convention. The temporary tax cuts expire Thursday as the tax revision bill remains unresolved.

Government seeks swift action on injunction dissolution

Justice Department attorney Nathan Norton told District Court Judge John Lewis Smith Jr. the government filed a two phase request and the judge granted the preliminary step to dissolve the injunction leading to activation of regulations that would affect 8.6 million Americans in the stamp program. If the judge refuses that step Norton said the government would seek further action.
