A very dry June in Columbus produced only 0.65 inches of rain, ranking among the driest on record. The city’s 1893 onward data show 1972 had 0.62 inches, with 1921 and other years following as the third driest.
President Ford signed a 1976 foreign aid package totaling 5.6 billion dollars, including 275 million for Israel. He vetoed a second authorization bill earlier, citing restrictions on foreign policy. The White House ceremony noted disapproval of a clause enabling disapproval of 19 aid programs by committees.
Ak-Sar-Ben selects ten individuals and one family in the Omaha area for the 33rd Good Neighbor Awards. Nominees are honored for selfless community service, receiving framed citations and gold lapel pins.
The Nebraska Committee for the Humanities awarded a 925 matching grant for a Columbus fall workshop titled The project, led by Elizabeth Britain, will bring diverse views on women's changing roles. Participating groups include the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women, the Columbus League of Women Voters, the Chamber of Commerce, and Platte Technical Community College's Community Services Division. The one day event, supported by NEH, aims to unite adults and scholars across history literature philosophy and law.
About 200 people have registered for the six week summer session at Platte Technical Community College. Registrations remain open through Tuesday during day and tonight and Tuesday evening at the Student Services Office.
Columbus Public Library reviews budget and building plans with the Finance and Purchasing Committee. Remodeling to the West Nebraska Public Power Building is estimated at 122000 dollars with 41000 raised so far by the library foundation.
The final Business and Financial section of the Columbus Telegram Bicentennial edition publishes a Platte County history by Keith Bryan plus pieces by Francis J and early Columbus images. Subscribers receive the full packet with extra copies available for mail order from the Telegram office with postage per ad.
July 4th activities in Columbus begin at 6 45 p m in Frankfort Square with colors by American Legion. A melodrama directed by Ken Bonk runs about 1 25 hours with audience participation. Fireworks cap the Bicentennial night at 10 p m at Agricultural Park. A Saturday matinee is planned in Frankfort Square. Junior Legion cancels several baseball games but a Pawnee Park double header against Lincoln Judd is set. The Columbus Telegram will publish Monday despite the holiday.
