Severe weather weekend left Minden Iowa devastated with two homes destroyed and extensive damage cited at more than one million dollars. A funnel-cloud report over Chicago suburbs followed, while Des Plaines windy chaos toppled a crowded carnival tent injuring eleven.
Ottawa announced a settlement with Canada's pilots and air traffic controllers over the language dispute that disrupted air travel for nine days. No immediate word on when pilots would return to work. Air Canada spokesman provided the statement.
UPI tally shows Ford within 66 delegates of the 1130 needed after a 17 to 1 win in Minnesota while Reagan gains with 45 delegates from Idaho Montana and New Mexico within 70 of Ford. Carter holds 1714 plus of the 1505 needed for Democratic nomination with convention next month in New York.
A revolutionary court in Luanda sentenced four mercenaries to death by firing squad and gave long prison terms to nine others. Among the condemned were Daniel Gearhart of Maryland and two Britons for roles in massacres. the sentences await presidential confirmation.
At Dorado Puerto Rico the seven leaders including Ford Giscard D Estaing Moro Callaghan Schmidt and Miki opened talks urging coordinated efforts to curb inflation and curb government spending amid wage and social program concerns. Greenspan cited Ford blaming overambitious social commitments for inflation and recession risks while allies pressed for flexibility in timelines and policy divergence.
Palestinian militants who hijacked an Air France jet from Athens to Entebbe allowed 258 passengers and crew to leave the aircraft and enter the terminal in Paris officials reported. The crew and remaining passengers remained under hijackers control while negotiations continued and Uganda's Idi Amin pressed for French action.
